The marimba is a percussive musical instrument with wooden keys that are struck with mallets to produce distinct tones. Its key layout resembles that of a piano, with vertically raised accidentals overlapping the natural keys for the performer's ease.

The chromatic marimba originated in southern Mexico and northern Guatemala, evolving from the diatonic marimba, itself inspired by an African balafon constructed by slaves in Central America.
